How to recover lost data from SD card?

SD cards are pluggable memory chips, which stores  data even when they lose power. SD cards are most commonly used by digital cameras, cell phones, laptops, PDA’s, mp3 players etc. Some SD cards have sliding tab i.e. manual write-protect switch, which is located on the side of the SD card. If this sliding tab is in the lock position, then it does not allow you to write any contents to SD card thereby provides protection. SD cards are available in 2 tiny forms i.e. Mini Secure Digital (miniSD) card and Micro Secure Digital (microSD) card. MiniSD cards and microSD cards does not have write protect switch but, you can insert those cards in SD card adapter which contains write-protect switch. In order to access data from SD card directly, you need a card reader. Sometimes, you may encounter some error messages while accessing data from SD card. These error messages may not allow you to access the data from SD card resulting in data loss. If you want to recover lost data from SD card then you need to use relevant SD card recovery tool.

You may encounter error messages like “Unrecognized file format”, “Card error”, “Card not initialized”, “Cannot read from the card. Do you want to format it now?” etc. The main reason for occurrence of these type of errors is file system corruption. Generally, SD cards support FAT32 file system that allows you to access data from SD card. It stores allocation information of each stored file in its file allocation table. File system may get corrupted due to various reasons like spyware, malware or virus attack, power failure, abruptly removing SD card etc. When this file system gets corrupted then it does not allow you to access data from SD card resulting in data loss. Sometimes, you may accidentally format the SD card resulting in data loss. When you format the SD card, the data stored in SD card gets deleted and new file system is created to store new data. You can transfer SD card data to your computer by using card reader. If you accidentally remove SD card from card reader when data is being transferred to computer may results in data loss.

Always eject SD card using “Safely Remove Hardware” icon to avoid data loss. Take backup of essential data. If you have accidentally formatted the SD card then don’t use that SD card to save or copy new data. Because, saving or copying new data may overwrite old data resulting in permanent data loss beyond the recovery.

Remo Recover (Windows) Media Edition is able to recover lost data from accidentally formatted SD cards. Along with SD cards, this software also supports different types of memory cards like CF cards, MMC, XD cards etc. This software can identify and recover different types of files based on their unique signature. This software has special in-built algorithms to restore lost data from SD cards. Download free demo version of this software to evaluate recovery results. Later, you can store recoverd data on any windows accessible drives.
